Long Shadows

We got our first big snow of the year in NYC this weekend. As I was walking through the park looking for an inspirational snowy landscape to paint I remembered when I was in Moscow at art school many years ago a friend told me that she needed a heated palette for her winter outdoor painting. I considered myself to be quite the seasoned plein air painter at the time, so I helpfully informed her that oil paints don't freeze. To this she replied "Yes they do, when it is -40 degrees Celsius." I exclaimed that when it was that temperature outside it was much to cold to go and paint, to which she said "One day it is too cold, another day it is too hot, but somedays one must paint!" I promptly decided she was a much more seasoned plein air painter than I after all...
