In this painting I was trying to capture the quiet glow of the December sunset on a small lake in Central Park. I prepared a panel with gold enamel, which is an ancient technique that the Byzantines used in their icons, both for the beautiful effect and as a metaphor for divine light. Then I proceeded to paint on it in glazes to create the marshy land and the water.

Sunset on Water
In this painting I was trying to capture the quiet glow of the December sunset on a small lake in Central Park. I prepared a panel with gold enamel, which is an ancient technique that the Byzantines used in their icons, both for the beautiful effect and as a metaphor for divine light.
